Pantothen is a dietary supplement featuring Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, B12, Biotin, Pantothenic acid, and L-carnitine. These are all good vitamins to take for general health.
Thiamin is also known as vitamin B-1. It is essential for neurological health. Deficiency causes symptoms such as beriberi, Wenicke-Korsakoff syndrome, and optic neuropathy. Deficiency is often seen in alcoholics.
Riboflavin deficiency results in irritation of the mouth, especially the corners, and chapped lips.
Niacin: Niacin is a form of Vitamin B3. Vitamin B3 deficiency causes a disease called pellagra. Symptoms include diarrhea, inflamed skin, dementia, and sores in the mouth.
Vitamin B-6 deficiency causes irritation and redness around the mouth, atrophic glossitis (red glossy tongue), irritation around the mouth, conjunctivitis (redness of the eyes), intertrigo (irritation of the skin folds), sideroblastic anemia and neurologic symptoms such as sleepiness, confusion, and neuropathy.
Folate is essential for cellular growth. Its deficiency causes anemia. Deficiency in pregnant women can lead to neural tube defects of the baby.
Vitamin B12 is also important for neurological health and its deficiency can cause permanent damage to the brain and nervous system. B12 is present in animal products and deficiency should be a concern for vegans.
Biotin: biotin is known to be helpful for hair, skin, and nail health as it is involved in important metabolic pathways such as the creation of glucose (gluconeogenesis), the creation of fats, and amino acid breakdown.
Pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5) is required to make coenzyme A and to synthesize and metabolize proteins, carbohydrates and fats. B-5 deficiency is rare. Major sources of it are fortified cereals, mushrooms, liver, egg yolks, and sunflower seeds. Observations made on victims of starvation and volunteers have found that deficiency causes irritability, fatigue, and apathy. Other symptoms include disorders of the nervous, gastrointestinal, immune systems as well as poor hair growth and skin lesions.
L-carnitine affects people with a genetic disorder of the cellular carnitine transporter system. It usually presents with cardriomyopathy, skeletal muscle weakness, and hypoglycemia. Carnitine deficiency can also affect those with kidney failure or people who have trouble absorbing carnitine and holding onto carnitine such as those who take antibiotics or have a carnitine-poor diet.
