What is ProactivMD?

ProactivMD is Proactiv’s newest acne control solution. It consists of multiple topical products for acne. The first step is a daily cleanser. Compared with Proactiv 3 Step, ProactivMD cleanser no longer has uses the antibiotic Benozyl Peroxide (BPO). BPO is an antibiotic which targets one of the causes of acne, the overgrowth of Cutibacterium (Propionibacterium) acnes bacteria.

The second product is a sunblock that uses the ingredients avobenzone 3%, octisalate 5%, octocrylene 7%. We recommend daily sunblock use and commend Proactiv for including this in their system.

The third and final product in ProactivMD is a topical retinoid, adapalene. Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A that have been used to treat acne lesions. These Vitamin A derivatives unblock clogged acne pores and help the skin to heal. Adapalene is the only over-the-counter available retinoid that is stronger than retinol. Other retinoids require a prescription.

Supplementation with Lactobacillus probiotics was found to make a clinical improvement in patients suffering from acne. Proactiv 3 Step does not have any probiotics.
	Hormonal Support	Some have argued that the main cause of acne are hormones. In particular, androgens which cause an increase in sebum production. Some prescription drugs for acne have an antiandrogen effect. ProactivMD does not address this issue.
	Skin Cleanser	Cleansing your skin is an important part of skin care. Dirt can clog pores and lead to the development of acne lesions. The ProactivMD system includes a face wash.
Some	Skin moisturizer	After cleaning your face you should use a non-comedogenic moisturizer. The ProactivMD system has a moisturizer for daytime use but not one for night time. You should get a moisturizer without sunblock for nighttime use.
	Retinoid	After cleaning your face you should use a non-comedogenic moisturizer. The ProactivMD system has adapalene which is a 3rd generation retinoid.
